Top three destinations for a classics school tour
Greece, Italy and Turkey are perfect destinations if you're thinking of ways to really get your students to focus their minds when it comes to the classics or archaeology. There is perhaps no better way of stimulating youngsters' interest in a subject than by allowing them to experience what they learn about firsthand. Reading about areas of classical antiquity may interest students up to a point, but you could help them gain a better grasp on the subject and ignite their curiosity by allowing them to take in age-old ruins for themselves.
Greece
Travel to Athens, where your students can engage in enthralling sites, including the Acropolis and Parthenon, as well as various temples dedicated to the Greek gods. Here, scholars can learn about classical Greek civilisation and the emergence of democracy in the fifth century.
Outside of Athens you can show young travellers ancient sites such as Corinth, which was first inhabited in the Neolithic period, or make your way to Olympia - the original site of the Olympic Games in classical times. Read more about school trips in Greece
Italy
A school trip to Rome will enable your students to explore the Colosseum, which was historically used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles, as well as the Roman Forum, where it is possible to see remnants of 12 centuries of history.
To fully immerse your students in classics and archaeology you should take a ride on the Circumvesuviana railway and call in at major sites of importance such as Pompeii, Herculaneum and Sorrento. Read more about school trips in Italy
