One of the best loved regions of France, Normandy is lush and well cultivated. The local cuisine is delicious with plenty of reliance on apples, local cider, seafood cream, and the famous Calvados liqueur "Le Trou Normand".
There are some tremendous excursions here with particular relevance to English history. Bayeux, Rouen and Mont St Michel are showpieces of French tourism, as are the landing beaches and memorials of the Second World War.
In Domfront, the history of this town and that of England are intertwined. From the eleventh century it was the property of the Anglo-Norman kings and visited by the Plantagenets, Henry II, Eleanor of Aquitaine and Richard the Lionheart. Henry, the third son of William the Conqueror, built the castle here at the beginning of the twelfth century. With its narrow streets, its inner courtyards and its half-timbered houses, Domfront remains today a fine example of medieval architecture.
