Nord-pas de Calais is a perfect destination for groups wanting a short visit to France as the region is ideally located just a step away from the UK. Nord Calais is also close to the WWI Battlefields of Somme and Ypres making it an ideal base for groups wanting a battlefields tour. Students will enhance their understanding of the WWI Battlefields whilst enjoying exploring the French culture in the regions many market towns.
History Excursions
- Somme WWI Battlefields - Visit Vimy Ridge, Newfoundland Park trenches at Beaumont- Hamel, Thiepval Memorial to the Missing, the Ulster Tower and Lochnagar Crater at La Boisselle.
- Ypres WWI Battlefields - The In Flanders Field Museum gives a graphic illustration of life during the Great War. Your guided tour will take you to Tyne Cot Cemetery, Hill 62/Sanctuary Wood British trenches, Langemarck German Cemetery and St. Julien Gas Attack Memorial.
- Agincourt - The village is on the site where Henry V defeated the French in the Battle of Agincourt, 1415. In Samara visit a reconstructed prehistoric village.
- Caves of Naours - This underground city is absolutely incredible – 33m below ground level it covers more than 2km with 300 rooms and 28 galleries.
- Historial de la Grande Guerre, Peronne - A triangular museum giving insight into the act of war.
- Olhain Castle - Set in the middle of a lake, the castle survived the ‘Hundred Years’ War’.
Curriculum Focus
- The nature of warfare, exemplified by the Agincourt campaign and the Battle of Naseby.
- Opportunity to study and visit World War I battlefields in Somme and Ypres.
