Geography school trips to Lanzarote

Geography school trips to Lanzarote

This volcanic island gives a rare opportunity to experience a rift valley and explore continental drift first-hand – a process that was first observed here 100 years ago by the German geophysicist, Wegener. Lanzarote’s abundance of volcanic landforms is astounding and creates huge scope for students to deepen their tectonic knowledge, draw comparisons and consolidate classroom learning. Here, your group can experience one of the world’s longest lava tubes, and set foot in Timanfaya National Park – a UNESCO biosphere that was devastated by more than 100 active volcanoes during the 18th century. Sustainable development is a key theme at the island’s underground, rock-hewn eco-home, while students can learn more about Lanzarote’s resources, economy and ecology at the Salinas de Janubio salt plant, and investigate the reality of living with volcanoes in the island’s resorts and small towns.

Subject Specific Excursions

Timanfaya National Park

More than 100 volcanoes devastated this UNESCO biosphere site during a series of 18th century eruptions. Today, the park’s lunar-like landscape is home to extinct craters, rare plants and historic lava flows.

Mancha Blanca

Visit this Lanzarote village and experience the fascinating Visitor Centre, which is semi-submerged in a sea of lava. Learn about the volcanic activity of Timanfaya National Park, the birth of the Canaries and the structure of the Earth through impressive interactive displays.

Salinas de Janubio

The Canary Islands’ largest salt production plant is also an important conservation area, where flora and fauna thrive in the saline conditions. Explore how plants have adapted and study the area’s development from a natural lagoon to a major salt refinery.

Cueva de los Verdes

This volcanic tunnel was formed by an eruption of Monte Corona, around 3,000 years ago. A network of caves extends above ground and under the sea, with more than a mile’s worth accessible to visitors and illuminated by colourful lights.

House of Volcanoes, El Mirador

In 1973, Artist Cesar Manrique carved his underground home into volcanic rock that created by the world’s longest eruption. A sustainable development, El Mirador features volcanic chambers which are naturally lit by skylights created by burst lava bubbles.
