Equity School travel to Morrocco

School trips to Marrakech

Fire-eaters and fortune-tellers, spice-markets and snake-charmers. Spicy tagines and saffron couscous, freshly baked flat breads and sweet mint tea. The ancient medina and the modern city, bustling streets and botanical gardens. Marrakesh is home to the largest souk in Morocco and one of the busiest city squares in the world.

Study sustainability in the souk, as you pass leather-workers, cobblers and potters. Look up from the labyrinth streets to see the towering Koutoubia Mosque. Discover Moroccan artefacts in the Museum of Marrakesh, relax in the Majorelle Gardens, or explore Berber crafts and culture in the Dar Si Saïd Museum. Join the locals in Djemaa El-Fna square to slurp garlic snails and sip freshly squeezed orange juice as you listen to Berber storytellers and Moroccan musicians. Take a horse-drawn carriage tour around the city walls and take in the ochre sandstone buildings that give Marrakesh its name – The Red City. Contrast the riads and stalls of the old medina with the luxury hotels and offices of the modern city.

In around three hours flight time, student groups will find themselves in an entirely new world. We offer an excellent choice of accommodation, with safety, comfort and convenience at the forefront of our selection. Overflowing with fascinating culture and rich history, whether you choose to focus your studies on Marrakesh, or use it as a base to explore Morocco’s rural and mountain landscapes, this city never fails to impress.

Toubkal National Park & the Atlas Mountains

Experience a unique mountain environment of 4000-metre peaks and Berber villages, just two hours’ drive from Marrakech. Study desertification and geology, investigate agriculture and irrigation, and explore impacts of the growing tourism industry.

Medina of Marrakesh

Bursting with captivating sights, sounds and smells, Marrakesh’s old town gives a fascinating insight into urban change and traditional lifestyles. Experience the blend of tourism and local economies, with souvenir shops standing next to barbers, restaurants, laundrettes and motorbike workshops.

The Koutoubia Mosque

Built during the Hispano-Moresque period in Morocco, the Koutoubia Mosque is the largest and most significant mosque in Marrakech. Five times a day, you will hear the moving call to prayer which echoes throughout the city. The Koutoubia Mosque is one of the best ways to learn about Moroccon culture.

The Souk District

No visit to Marrakech is complete without a trip to the Souk District; the largest collection of markets in Morocco. The smell of spices, leather goods and incense fill the air, adding to the vibrant, bustling atmosphere that the city is well known for. Even if you don’t plan on buying anything here, exploring the souks is a spectacle well worth experiencing.

Bahia Palace

One of the best preserved historical sites and considered as one of the grand palaces in the city of Marrakech, the breathtakingly beautiful Bahia Palace is a must-see historical attraction, where students can get a taste of Arabic architecture built in the 1800s. Filled to the brim with colourful tiles, mosaics, palm trees and stained glass windows, Bahia Palace will truly inspire your students.

DJemaa el Fna Square

For over a thousand years DJemaa el Fna Square has been the main commercial and gathering place in the centre of Marrakech. A great source of entertainment, snake charmers, storytellers, musicians and fortune tellers base themselves at the market sqaure, gathering large crowds of locals and tourists. If you’re feeling a bit peckish, take your pick from the many street food stalls – selling anything from fresh fruit juice to sizzling kebabs.

Maison de la Photographie

A great alternative attraction or source of inspiration for art and photography students, Maison de la Photographie is a thought provoking photography museum located in the heart of Marrakech. Hosting a variety of ever changing exhibitions, the museum holds a comprehensive collection of original photographs portraying the history of Morocco and its people.

Approximately 60km south of Marrakech, Imlil and surroundings offer students the opportunity to discover landforms, erosion and visit a local village to see how fields are irrigated.
