Classics school trips to Sicily
Many ancient civilisations conquered the island of Sicily and because of this it is a rich and cultural destination for a Classics school trip. The Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Normans, Barbarians and Byzantines all had their input in Sicily and its position in the Mediterranean made it the crossroads for invaders and traders from Europe, Asia and Africa. Explore ancient street layouts, religious monuments and public buildings centred on Agrigento’s magnificent Greek acropolis. Overlooking the Mediterranean, the city’s extensive remains show evidence that Agrigento was once one of the largest and most fashionable centres of the ancient world. Investigate layers of history to enable understanding of the daily experiences of generations of Greek and Roman inhabitants. There are many sites to visit on an Equity school trip to Sicily, all of which will enhance your students’ appreciation and understanding of classical civilisations.
