One of the world’s holiest Catholic sites and largest churches, this cavernous building features a breath-taking dome and masterpieces by Michelangelo and Bernini. Study the power of Catholicism and the importance of pilgrimage as you experience this Vatican City highlight.
The Sistine Chapel
Commissioned in 1480, the Sistine Chapel is the site of the papal conclave and is home to Michelangelo’s elaborate ceiling and Last Judgment fresco. Study the role and selection of the Pope and explore religious art in this powerful building.
Archbasilica of St John Lateran
The Pope’s official ecclesiastical seat, St John Lateran takes the title of ‘Archbasilica’ and ranks above all other Roman Catholic churches. It houses a fragment of the table on which Jesus was said to have consumed the last supper.
Audience with the Pope
On Wednesdays the Pope holds an audience in St Peter's Square and your students can experience this unique event. It usually takes place at 10am and lasts approximately 3 hours. *Please note this is strictly subject to availability.
Colosseum and Forum
Explore the role and importance of religion in the 2,000 year old Colosseum, where gladiators and beasts once battled. Tour the adjacent Forum and see the ruins of ancient Rome’s most exclusive neighbourhood, where emperors lived in luxury.
